Playoffs wide open

Some of the biggest names in Nassau baseball have already fallen this postseason thanks to some unlikely winners. No. 2 Clarke, last year's Class A champion, fell to 15th-seeded North Shore (the Vikings lost to first-seeded Wantagh in the next round). No. 13 Valley Stream North took down No. 6 Garden City before losing to Division. No. 7 Glen Cove dealt Clarke its first loss.

Class AA champ Massapequa was pushed aside by No. 6 Bellmore JFK.

The field is now wide-open, though the favorite in AA, first-seeded MacArthur, and A, first-seeded Wantagh, remain in the chase.

TENNIS

Something has to give

Awarded to the winner of the Suffolk final between Half Hollow Hills East and Ross will be an unenviable matchup with Cold Spring Harbor in the Long Island championship.

Neither top-seeded Hills East or No. 2 Ross have lost a match all season, but something will have to give when they meet on Tuesday at Smithtown East. The winner advances to take on the two-time defending Long Island champion Seahawks, who also remained unbeaten after defeating Roslyn, 6-1, in the Nassau final on Thursday. The Long Island championship will be played on Wednesday at Smithtown East.

Our Lady of Mercy's Andrea Arreguin finished second in No. 1 singles with a 5-1 record and was named CHSAA player of the year. In third singles, Rachel Caires (SJB, 6-0) took first ahead of Sarah Ewald (OLMA, 5-1).
