WRESTLING

Rocky Point coach Darren Goldstein had high praise for Glenn, the top-ranked Division I wrestling team in the state, after the Knights defeated his Eagles, 33-17, on Friday night.

"If we wrestled them 10 times, we'd probably win three of them," he said.

Goldstein believes his team is better suited for tournaments, as Stephen Dutton (140 pounds), Anthony Volpe (160) and Billy Coggins (171) are expected to compete for county and state titles. But from a dual-meet standpoint, he sees Glenn and Hauppauge as the top teams on the Island.

"That would be the match of the year," he said, "maybe the match of the decade."

Glenn's Nick Terdick was just happy to have the inside track at the league title.

Said the 152-pounder, who is a defending state runner-up: "It was a good benchmark because it's probably the last tight competition we'll see."

GYMNASTICS

Massapequa gymnastics coach Mike Capone earned his 270th Conference I victory earlier this week in a 156.50-139.05 victory over Carle Place. Capone has been coaching for 35 years and, in that span, has had fewer than 60 losses . . . On Jan. 11, Oceanside High School set a school record for total points scored with 171.6, passing the 2008 record of 171.4, according to coach Andy Morris. Paige McCarthy took the all-around with a 35.7, and a 9.4 on beam during the meet . . . After the victory against Sewanhaka District on Wednesday, Plainview remains undefeated at 7-0. Plainview and Oceanside are the only teams left with a perfect record. The two will meet Feb. 1 at Jamaica Avenue Elementary School - Plainview's home base.

SWIMMING

As if it wasn't crowded enough at the top in Nassau, Jericho and Bellmore JFK tied, 93-93, on Jan. 12.

Going into the final event, Jericho led by just two points 87-85. But Bellmore won the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.42 to 3:31.82) to force the tie.

Other highlights: Austin Kowalsky won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.79) and the 500 freestyle (5:10.19) for Bellmore and Joseph Na won the 50 freestyle (23.07) and the 100 freestyle (54.03) for Jericho.

Jericho coach Richard Stern said he was surprised by several of Bellmore's times which were significantly faster than their top times coming into the event, something he traces to the rivalry between the schools.

"It's always a great meet when we get together," Stern said. "That Bellmore team is one I've been telling my team about all year long. They're a heck of a team. Coach Bob Kaefer is going to have those boys flying by counties."
