I happen to think that Suffolk County has better uses for $9 million in federal transportation funds than for a proposed 13-mile hiking trail under Long Island Power Authority power lines ["Bike path idea needs a breakthrough," Editorial, Feb. 10].

Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) explains his efforts to keep the funding for this project alive with the statement that the trail is "something that the people want." I've hiked all over this island and never felt deprived by a lack of trails. This is not something I want my tax dollars spent on.

This is a time of severe economic conditions and financial hardship that is affecting many residents. With the federal deficit being what it is, perhaps Rep. Bishop could support business growth and employment expansion.
