Free spay/neuter for pit bulls this month
Ghosts, goblins and pit bulls share the spotlight this month.

Huntington Town is partnering with the League for Animal Protection to offer free spaying or neutering of pit bulls and pit bull mixes owned by town residents during October, which is Pit Bull Awareness Month.

This is the second consecutive year the town is offering this service. Last year, town officials say 55 residents took advantage of the offer.

“We were pleased with the program’s success last year, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in a release. “And are happy to partner again with the League for Animal Protection which has worked with the Town at the shelter to increase awareness of how adoptable pit bulls can be.”

The program works the same as last year. Residents can visit the Town Animal Shelter on Deposit Road in East Northport and show proof of residency. They then will receive vouchers to take to participating veterinarians, who are to perform the procedure.

Town and shelter officials cite a number of reasons for spaying or neutering pets including that it helps thwart pet overpopulation; spaying a female helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs; neutering a male dog prevents testicular cancer; a female won’t go into heat and a neutered dog is less likely to mark his territory; a neutered male won’t want to roam from home to find a mate, making it less likely someone will lose their pet; and a neutered male may be much better behaved.
