History of Robert Bonerba bribery case

AUGUST 2006

The Suffolk district attorney's office subpoenas personnel records of then-Smithtown Building Director Robert Bonerba.

DEC. 19, 2006

Bonerba is suspended by the town for failing to comply with financial disclosure rules. The town later discovers Bonerba's retirement is effective Dec. 31, making moot a January hearing on his potential termination.

NOV. 15, 2007

Developer Robert Fitzpatrick of Bayport is arrested on three charges of filing a false instrument for claiming false ownership of the home, and building a new home instead of an extension as reported on building permit.

MARCH 31, 2008

Smithtown developer Frank Esposito pleads guilty to third-degree bribery for giving money to Bonerba.

APRIL 28, 2008

Fitzpatrick changes his plea to guilty and admits to working in concert with Esposito to bribe Bonerba with $10,000.

MAY 6, 2008

Bonerba is arrested and charged in a 42-count indictment.

SEPT. 26, 2008

Court documents name developers who, prosecutors say, gave cash and services to Bonerba, James Fox and Farouk Kiridly.

MARCH 11, 2009

The DA subpoenas records in variance cases, including one case involving property once owned by Town Assessor Gregory Hild and now owned by Richard Vecchio, the supervisor's son.

MARCH 19, 2009

DA's office subpoenas records for a former lumber site and former hospital site in Smithtown owned by Salvatore DiCarlo.
