Hockey Headlines: Portledge Girls Hockey Is Pretty Darn Good
We're running a feature on the Portledge boys hockey team tomorrow, and I have a beat note item on the girls. But since the boys get a whole page, I thought I'd give the girls a little bit of extra exposure on the blog:
Even if the Portledge School weren’t the only girls hockey high school team on the Island, it would likely still be in a class of their own.
But after winning the WIHLMA championship in 2009, the Morristown-Beard School defeated Portledge 5-4 in double overtime to claim the 2010 title on Feb. 21 at the Hill School in Pennsylvania.
"You didn’t really feel badly after you lost the game because everybody played so hard," coach Zoe Schwam said. "We felt we left it all on the ice."
The game culminated a year that saw Portledge (8-2-2) finish in third place, but still reach the championship game for the third consecutive year.
Addie Reilly led the offense with 17 goals and three assists, while Julie Devlin (seven goals, five assists) and Erin Brand (six goals, six assists) each had 12 points.
Gabriela Pilson saved 146 of 153 shots, allowing just seven goals in her eight games in net to go 6-1-1.
"The last three years in a row we’ve been in a championship game and it’s been decided by one goal each time," Athletic Director Phil Hills said. "Morristown won two years ago, we won last year and they won again this year. So hopefully, next year is our turn again."
