Three student journalists at Hofstra University have won $10,000 from Fox News Channel in a nationwide college journalism contest.

The students, junior Shannan Ferry, 20, of Little Neck; junior Julia Skrobak, of Bethlehem, Penn.; and senior Megan Corcoran, of Clarks Summit, Penn., won for a video package on efforts to stop the use of horse carriages in New York City.

The students, along with their professor, Jamie Cohen, were featured in a segment last Friday on Fox to discuss the project.

Ferry, the station manager at WHRU, the school’s radio station, is a journalism major who plans to become a TV reporter. She said she came across the Fox News Channel College Challenge while looking for internship opportunities online and then pulled in Skrobak and Corcoran for the project. The trio work together at “Hofstra Today”, a weekly TV news program at the university.

As part of the award, the students got to interview for an internship at Fox. Hofstra University’s journalism program also received a $10,000 grant to go toward scholarships, grants or new equipment.

For her share of the $10,000, Ferry said she first offered to give it to her parents to help cover tuition expenses, but her father told her to save it for her next car.

Cohen credits the students passion for their win. “The girls are extremely talented,” he said.

On the whole experience, Ferry said it was “definitely one of those moments when I felt hard work pays off.”
