Hofstra medical school to aid vets

The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University has joined more than 100 other medical colleges around the country in an effort to enhance the health of U.S. veterans, service members and their families.
The Hempstead campus is part of an initiative called Joining Forces, announced last week in Washington, D.C., by first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Darrell G. Kirch, head of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Hofstra and the other schools have agreed that all physicians will be trained in the unique clinical challenges of those in military service or who have served in the armed forces.
“Medical schools have long recognized the sacrifice and commitment of our military, veterans and their families,” Kirch said in a statement. “The relationship between the Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers and academic medicine dates back to the end of World War II.”
The institutions, he added, will share up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic information on traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder as well as expand the body of knowledge leading to improvements in health care and wellness for the military population.
