Hofstra professor dons costume to teach women's rights

Cynthia Bogard, chairwoman of the sociology department at Hofstra University, dressed as an immigrant Tuesday, educating students on issues facing the country and which ones to watch out for during the second presidential debate Tuesday night.

Bogard produces drama performances at the university featuring men and woman dressed as historical figures involved in women's rights. On Tuesday, she and others dressed as past influential figures, like Susan B. Anthony and Teddy Roosevelt, spoke to students at the student center

"We're trying to evoke the issues in today's election with its historical counterparts," said Bogard, 56, of Wading River. "We want to broaden our approach at teaching and broaden the appeal of politics for students. We want to create the next generation of critically engaged participants in democracy."
