Holocaust Memorial to host bullying summit
A diverse group will hold a discussion on bullying Friday at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove.
Peter Stone and Lillian Gewirtzman, survivors of Nazi concentration camps, will be joined by Carly Hanft, a 15-year-old Roslyn High School student and the center’s youth ambassador, as well as Miss New York State 2010 Claire Buffie, local legislators and a Nassau County Police detective at 10:30 a.m. They will discuss the results of a national study, conducted by Clemson University, that revealed one in six American students is bullied regularly.
The panel, assembled by the directors of the holocaust center, was brought together because the study also revealed that 30 percent of boys in grades 3 through 5 said their teacher had done little or nothing to reduce bullying. Sixty percent in grades 9 through 12 said the same thing.
To combat this problem, Pinto said legislators will be revealing new laws to combat bullying that will become effective in 2011; Hanft will be discussing how she and her friends combat bullying in their school; and Stone and Gewirtzman will discuss their experiences during the Holocaust.
