Homerun: Three transit cops deliver a baby in police station at Yankee Stadium stop
The Yankees should have such catchers!
A pregnant Bronx woman en route to a doctor's appointment on her due date had her baby boy delivered Thursday morning by three transit cops inside a police complaint room at the Yankee Stadium stop of the No. 4 train..
"This was one of my best days," said officer Yaneli Garcia, who gave birth herself to a daughter just seven months ago. Garcia, Officer Norma Vargas Benitez and Lt. Sylvia Mendoza delivered little Maxwell Thursday at 10:25 a.m. in the police station known as Transit District 11.
Cops were alerted around 10:10 a.m. that a woman whose water had broken had gotten off the southbound 4 train. Police escorted a panting and pained Tamika Snipes, 21, into the station and Garcia and Vargas covered a floor with clean plastic garbage bags and blankets. "Officers took off their jackets," to help provide a cushion for Snipes to lay on, Mendoza recounted. As Garcia and Benitez prepared Snipes, they saw the baby's head crowning. Mendoza, who had called 911 for instructions, relayed instructions to check on the baby's color (good!) and to make sure the umbilical chord wasn't wrapped around his neck (whew!). After he emerged there was a brief moment of terror - and then he opened his mouth and wailed, relieving everyone.
EMS arrived about 10 minutes after Maxwell, and EMS officers allowed his grandmother - Lorell Snipe, who was accompanying Tamika to her doctor's appointment - to cut the cord, said Mendoza. Mother and child were taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
The trio was so focused on making sure the baby was breathing they had to backtrack to confirm one small detail. The unwrapped the swaddled baby, Mendoza explained, because "we had to find out if it was a boy or a girl."
