The Riverhead Town board has declared a house across the street from a local cemetery to be a public nuisance and has directed town workers to clean up the accumulated debris that has collected behind the overgrown trees and bushes.

The language of the resolution which the town board approved Tuesday in a 5-0 vote states that the accumulated debris “may cause a fire hazard, create a nuisance or ... furnish a potential harborage or breeding place for disease-carrying animals ... ”

Town officials said the cost of the cleanup would ultimately be charged to the property owner of the house at 852 Roanoke Ave.
