House Speaker tells members to stay home next week amid shutdown
House leaders have decided, for now, not to call members back to Washington next week amid the government shutdown.
The announcement Friday afternoon from the House floor read, "the Speaker's designation of Tuesday, Oct. 7 through Monday, Oct. 13 as a district work period."
The House was not in session this week, but House Speaker Mike Johnson had been intending to reconvene on Monday, but has reversed that.
Plans can change — and coming up is a deadline for lawmakers to pass a military pay bill — before the next checks on Oct. 15.
