Hunger leads to desperate acts

While reading Newsday's police beat [LI Life, April 24], I noticed a man was arrested for stealing food in the frozen food department in a supermarket in Oceanside. Now, we all know that stealing is wrong. But do you think he stole the food to get rich?
He didn't rob a bank or a jewelry store. In this economy, people are stealing food to live. People need to eat.
People give money to victims of floods or earthquakes, and that's good. But we have a need right here in our own neighborhood. People don't have food. It's scary.
