Hunting, fishing celebrated in Ridge

The state Department of Environmental Conservation’s annual National Hunting and Fishing Day will be held Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ridge.
Launched in 1972 by the state as a way to thank sports-minded men and women who contribute to land conservation and environmental awareness, the day features kid-themed events such as a fishing derby, archery lessons, face painting and balloons.
Decoy, taxidermy and trapping displays will be on site, as well as hunting and retrieving dog demonstrations and a Rough Riders Cavalry Troop re-enactment.
“Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that our region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” DEC Regional Director Peter Scully said in a statement.
The event, held in collaboration with the Suffolk Alliance of Sportsmen, will be at the DEC’s Hunter Check Station in Ridge, which is a quarter-mile west of the William Floyd Parkway and a quarter-mile north of Route 25.
