Huntington senior-citizen volunteers honored

Nearly 250 people gathered Tuesday at Larkfield Manor in East Northport to recognize community service by the Town of Huntington's senior citizens.
As part of the annual Senior Citizens Recognition Day, six town residents were presented with proclamations issued by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson that highlighted their contributions to the town’s senior clubs.
Those honored included Willa Goodwin, 81, of Huntington Station; Thomas McKeown, 77, of East Northport; William Topazio, 81, of Huntington Station; Edna Vashel, 90, of Huntington; and Sophie and Sal Sarro, 98 and 88, respectively, of Huntington Station.
"The seniors are really the cornerstone of our community," said Jillian Guthman-Abadom, the town's director of human services. "Without them we wouldn’t be where we are today."
Attendees danced from noon until 4 p.m. while being serenaded by a two-man band that performed covers of everything from Frank Sinatra to the Black Eyed Peas.
"It's fun, it's always fun," Goodwin said of the event. "Actually, it's like family."
