Huntington Town Board member Mark Cuthbertson says this holiday season the town will be cracking down on motorists who improperly park in handicapped parking spaces.
“We want to raise awareness about the illegal parking that goes on during the holidays,” Cuthbertson said. “People get lazy, for want of a better term, and use dedicated handicapped parking spaces so they can get in and out of the stores more quickly.”
Cuthbertson is set to make the announcement Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station.
He said the crackdown will be enforced by an increase in the number of volunteers who patrol town parking lots throughout the year looking for violators.
The increased enforcement will take place through Dec. 24. Violators will be gifted with a $230 summons.
“We want people to consider the fact that people with real handicaps need those spaces,” Cuthbertson said.
