Huntington volunteers stopped from walking dogs

In a precautionary measure, the Town of Huntington has temporarily stopped allowing volunteers at the Huntington Animal Shelter to walk dogs after a volunteer was bitten by a pit bull about a week ago.
Huntington spokesman A.J. Carter said the unidentified volunteer walker did not notify town officials of the bite.
“We’ve suspended the dog walking by volunteers while reassessing our procedures and the responsibility of volunteers to report incidents,” Carter said.
In the meantime, the 44 dogs in the shelter on Deposit Road in East Northport are being walked by the shelter’s nine staff members. Carter said a meeting has been set up for Tuesday with the League of Animal Protection, which provides the dog-walking volunteers.
The league did not return calls for comment.
