In renewal push, Brookhaven approves review of sewage systems
At a town board meeting Tuesday, Brookhaven officials approved contracts to engineering firms to review the capacity and flow of all the sewage plants in Brookhaven as part of an effort to foster redevelopment in the town’s blighted areas.
"We suspect that currently only 5 percent of the town is serviced by municipal sewage systems and that number is far too low for an area as big as ours," Town Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement.
Brookhaven has the largest geographic area of any township on Long Island.
The town says the study will help identify which areas are in need of sewers and if there are sewers with excess capacity that can be used.
The town is addressing sewage issues as part of Lesko's "Blight to Light" initiative. The plan was first announced in April.
