First, there were the LI Tweetups, where a bunch of local Twitterers who usually chat in 140 characters or less got together for real conversations.

Now, the next step.  We hear today that the same folks who organized those functions have set up what they’re calling SocialMediaCamp Long Island. It’s a free “unconference” in which a few themes about Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are set and participants start talking -- no official panelists, thank you.

The event, set for May 1 at Hofstra University, is for novices and social-media buffs.
