Interviews for Southampton comptroller’s job

The Southampton Town board will interview two top candidates for the vacant town comptroller position at its work session today.

One of the candidates is C. Omarr Evans, a municipal financial consultant from upstate Binghamton.

The other candidate is John Morris, who served for one year as comptroller in Smithtown Town but was not reappointed following a dust-up with two councilmen who felt he did not answer their questions during the previous budget season.

The two candidates were scheduled to be interviewed during a public session at about 12:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Tamara Wright left the position after three years to take on the top finance spot in Brookhaven Town. Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst has called Wright the person responsible for turning around the town’s finances after years of mismanagement.

Southampton was rapped in a series of state comptroller audits, before Throne-Holst’s election to supervisor in 2009, for inadequate safeguards and procedures in the town’s finances.
