Isabelle Grant, Erin Pfail help Sacred Heart upend St. Anthony's
Isabelle Grant scored with 14:57 left to break a tie and Sacred Heart (4-2) topped St. Anthony's, 9-7, for the first time since 2006 in CHSAA girls lacrosse. St. Anthony's, the six-time Catholic league defending champion, is ranked fifth in the country and has not lost to a Long Island team since 2011.
After Grant put Sacred Heart ahead at 8-7, Erin Pfail (two goals) scored with 55 seconds left to create the final margin. Kathleen Berkery scored three goals. "It's a great victory for our program," coach Morgan Molinari said. "They've been working hard for a long time to have a victory like this. It was truly a great team win."
Center Moriches 13, Bellport 12: Paige Volkmann scored with 31 seconds left in the first overtime for a 12-11 lead and had four goals and an assist to lead Center Moriches (3-7) in Division II. Pam Schenck increased the lead with 2:46 left in the second OT. Janine Ratti scored her third goal of the game with 1:43 left in the fourth to tie the score for Center Moriches.
Longwood 20, Riverhead 15: Alison Johnson scored 10 goals, a school record, according to coach Randall Grossman, to lead Longwood (8-3) in Division I. Briana Sweeney recorded three goals and two assists. Angelica Lopez notched a hat trick.West Babylon 21, Commack 10: Sophomore Samantha Geiersbach had a career-high 12 points, seven goals and five assists, for West Babylon (7-2). Hampton Bays 75, Southampton 66: Darrell Galicia finished first in the shot put with a throw of 44-7 to lead Hampton Bays (5-1) in League VIII. He also won the discus with a throw of 133-3. Nick Berglin Jr. won the mile with a season-best 4:46.8 and the 3,200 with a time of 10:35.0Taylor wins at Penn Relays. Longwood's Dashawn Taylor won the long jump, going 23-63/4 at the Penn Relays over the weekend. Smithtown West's Ben Bonhurst won the shot put, throwing 63-5. Longwood's Corey Murphy was third, tossing 59-5.
