Islip expected to deny bakery's rezoning

Islip’s town board is expected to vote Tuesday to deny a Lindenhurst bakery products distributor’s application for a change in zoning that would have allowed the decades-old Long Island family company to relocate to Central Islip.

Ted Heim Jr.’s Inter-County Bakers Inc. had sought a zone change to accommodate the move of his round-the-clock warehouse and distribution operation into a vacant and unused state-owned facility on the east side of Eastside Drive at the intersection with Courthouse Drive.

But a vocal community-based opposition — mainly from residents at condo developments in the immediate vicinity, including the Courthouse Commons development and Islip Landing community — that fought the bid because it would mean increased truck traffic led Islip’s planning board to vote to recommend the application be denied.

Town officials have said the application is out of kilter with the neighborhood, now largely residential, recreational and educational in nature. The area also houses the federal court complex and the Long Island Ducks’ stadium.

Heim said he is still mulling options for his company relocation, but a vote to deny the application Tuesday would spell the death knell for the move to the state-owned Office of General Services site.
