Islip moves Halpin from WR to QB
Jack Halpin was one of the top targets in Islip’s high-powered offense last year. Now, he is being tasked with continuing the Buccaneers’ trend of having a dynamic dual threat quarterback.
He is following in the footsteps of Brady Nash and Jack Rao, who were at the helm of Islip’s explosive offenses the last two years.
Halpin reeled in 26 passes for 508 yards and seven touchdowns from Rao as a wide receiver. The LIU lacrosse commit will rely on his athleticism as he switches positions.
“(Nash and Rao) were more pure quarterbacks, but Jack is just as good of an athlete as them, so we’re looking to be one of the more explosive offenses again,” coach Jamie Lynch said. “He might run the ball a little more than those two did, but he has some quarterback experience behind him, so he can certainly throw it. He’s been a leader all offseason. Even with as much lacrosse he plays, he’s put as much time into football.”
Halpin was Islip’s JV quarterback as a sophomore, so it’s not a complete culture shock for the senior.
“It’s definitely a lot of pressure trying to follow up two great quarterbacks,” Halpin said. “It’s a lot different this offseason. I’ve had to memorize what everyone else on the offense is doing on each play. I’m also playing safety, so I have to know what everyone is doing defensively. It’s been a lot, but that’s what keeps me going.”
