Islip's Macaluso no-hits Rocky Point in 'A' quarterfinal
Islip senior Ed Macaluso pitched his first career no-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks for No. 2 Islip in an 8-0 win over No. 7 Rocky Point Monday in a Suffolk Class A quarterfinal baseball game.
It was Macaluso's 25th career win. Tyler Murphy was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Wil Vega was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Islip (17-3), which hosts No. 6 Kings Park at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a winners' bracket semifinal. Rocky Point will host No. 9 Bayport-Blue Point at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.
Mount Sinai 5, Hauppauge 1: Tyler Badamo threw a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked two, retiring the final 16 batters for No. 5 Mount Sinai (15-6) in a win over No. 4 Hauppauge in a Suffolk Class A quarterfinal. Nick D'Angelo had a two-run homer in the top of the third. Mount Sinai will play at Shoreham-Wading River at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Hauppauge will host No. 9 Glenn in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Kings Park 6, Sayville 3: Brandon Haney hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run second for No. 6 Kings Park (13-7) in a win over No. 3 Sayville in the Class A quarterfinals. Chris Pyz went 2-for-3 and Nick Venier threw seven innings, allowing eight hits and three runs with four strikeouts. Sayville will host the winner of Rocky Point-Bayport-Blue Point at 4 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game.
Longwood 7, Sachem North 6: Mario Parisi's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh won it for No. 2 Longwood (18-3), which trailed 6-3 at the start of the inning against No. 7 Sachem North in the winners' bracket of the Suffolk Class AA quarterfinals. Longwood's Marc Calabro drove in Robbie Mancuso with a pinch-hit single and Brandon McLain drove in Steven Fitzpatrick with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-5. In the top of the seventh, Brendan Garry hit a three-run home run to give the Flaming Arrows a 6-3 lead. Longwood will host Hills West at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Sachem North will play at Smithtown West at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.
Bellport 6, Smithtown East 0: Garrett Clark threw a five-hitter to lead No. 12 Bellport (11-9-1) over No. 4 Smithtown East in the winners' bracket of the Suffolk Class AA quarterfinals. Dylan Kern went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for Bellport, which will play at No. 1 Lindenhurst Wednesday at 4 p.m. Smithtown East hosts Patchogue-Medford at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.
Lindenhurst 5, Connetquot 2: Vin Valela hit a two-run single in the fourth to break a tie at 2 for No. 1 Lindenhurst (20-1) in the Class AA quarterfinals winners' bracket against No. 9 Connetquot, which hosts Commack at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.
Commack 10, Bay Shore 3: Joe Klein went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for No. 11 Commack (11-11) in a Class AA losers' bracket game. Charles Galiano went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in the win.
Half Hollow Hills 5, Centereach 3: Remy Janco threw a four-hitter, struck out five and allowed one earned run for No. 3 Hills West (18-4) against No. 6 Centereach, which will host Ward Melville at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.
MacArthur 11, Bellmore JFK 1: Michael Scro went 3-for-4 with five RBIs. He had a home run and a three-run triple that made it 7-1 for No. 1 MacArthur (19-3) against No. 6 Bellmore in Game 1 of the Nassau Class AA semifinals. Game 2 of the best-of-three will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bellmore JFK.
Calhoun 15, Carey 9: Dan Sullivan had a grand slam, Jake Thomas was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Frank Trimarco was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for No 2. Calhoun (17-5) in Game 1 of the Nassau Class AA semifinals. No. 3 Carey will host Calhoun in Game 2 of the best-of-three at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Division 10, Island Trees 9: Greg Menz drove in John Muller with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to win it for No. 3 Division (16-8) against No. 4 Island Trees in Game 1 of the Nassau Class A semifinals. Sean Abbate drove in Mike Cruz with a two-out single in the sixth to tie it at 9 for Division. Matt Santorufo pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Game 2 of the best-of-three is at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Island Trees.
Wantagh 5, Plainedge 4: Matt Dybus' single drove in Matt Benedetto in the bottom of the seventh to win it for No. 1 Wantagh (19-4), which trailed 4-2 to start the inning against No. 5 Plainedge in Game 1 of the Nassau Class A semifinals. The previous batter, Mike Addeo (3-for-4), tied it with a two-run double. Derek Novotny allowed the first three batters of the game to score, but allowed only three hits the rest of the way for the win. Game 2 of the best-of-three is at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Plainedge.
Oyster Bay 2, Locust Valley 0: Chris Kelly threw a five-hitter, walked none and struck out four and Jake Robinson hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to score Will Treiber for No. 1 Oyster Bay (21-1) in Game 1 of the Nassau Class B county championship at Adelphi. Oyster Bay added a run in the fifth when Joe Carbone scored on a two-out single by Al LoRusso. Game 2 of the best-of-three is Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. at Adelphi.
Holy Trinity 2, St. Anthony's 0: Max Almonte threw a three-hitter and struck out 13 to lead No. 1 Holy Trinity (17-6) over No. 6 St. Anthony's in Game 1 of the NSCHSAA semifinals at Farmingdale State. Anthony Brunetti singled in Jack Parenty, who doubled in the first. Game 2 is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Farmingdale State.
