J.J. Hardy's grand slam helps Orioles slam Twins

The Orioles had 18 hits and five walks yesterday in a 12-8 victory over the Twins, who lost despite getting 15 hits.

"I don't think I've seen a scoreboard where everybody on both teams had a hit," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Day like today, ball's carrying. It's a hard day to pitch. We just had a few more points than they did."

J.J. Hardy contributed his fourth career grand slam to a seven-run sixth inning and Nelson Cruz hit his major league-leading 35th home run as host Baltimore extended its AL East lead to nine games over the second-place Yankees.

Red Sox 3, Rays 0: Clay Buchholz (6-8) threw a three-hitter to lead visiting Boston.

Angels 8, A's 1: Mike Trout hit his career-high 31st homer and Matt Shoemaker (14-4) pitched seven shutout innings for host Los Angeles, which swept the four-game series and moved five games ahead of the A's. The Angels own the best record in the majors at 83-53. Scott Kazmir (14-7) got just four outs for the A's, who acquired Adam Dunn (460 career homers) from the White Sox.

White Sox 6, Tigers 2: Jose Quintana allowed two runs in seven innings for host Chicago.

Indians, Royals suspended. With visiting Cleveland leading 4-2 heading into the bottom of the 10th, the game was suspended because of rain. It will resume Sept. 22 in Cleveland. After the Royals' Alex Gordon hit a tying homer in the ninth, Lonnie Chisenhall had a two-out, two-run double in the 10th.

Mariners 5, Nationals 3: Dustin Ackley (four RBIs) homered for host Seattle. Washington's Bryce Harper homered twice.

Braves 1, Marlins 0: Alex Wood (10-10, 2.92) struck out 12 in eight innings and Evan Gattis homered for host Atlanta.

Reds 3, Pirates 2: Chris Heisey hit two home runs, including a tiebreaking shot in the ninth, for visiting Cincinnati and Johnny Cueto (16-8).

Giants 15, Brewers 5: Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run homer in a 16-hit attack for host San Francisco and Madison Bumgarner improved to 16-9. Before the game, the Brewers acquired righthanded reliever Jonathan Broxton (1.86 ERA in 51 appearances) from the Reds for two players to be named.

Cardinals 9, Cubs 6: Matt Holliday homered and broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run single for host St. Louis, which tied Milwaukee for the NL Central lead.

Dodgers 7, Padres 1: Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-6) pitched four-hit ball over seven innings for visiting Los Angeles.
