It's a good thing that Kellenberg's Jazmine Fray loves to sprint. Because she sure needed it during the 1,500 meters at the CHSAA Intersectional Championship on Saturday at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island.

Fray trailed Sacred Heart's Paige Duca and St. John the Baptist's Kate McCormack for the majority of the race before turning on her jets in the final 400 meters.

As the race went out, Duca and McCormack leaped out to an early lead, leaving Fray to watch them inch farther and farther away.

"I didn't feel like they were too far ahead,'' Fray said. "But I knew in my mind that they couldn't get any farther. Mentally, I had to keep pushing myself to catch up a little bit. I have a kick, but a kick can't do everything.''

By the time Fray reached the final straightaway, it was Duca and McCormack who were doing the chasing. Fray won in 4 minutes, 39.38 seconds. Duca finished second in 4:41.81. McCormack was third in 4:46.77.

Fray's 1,500 victory came after she won the 800 in 2:13.49 earlier in the meet.

"I love the 800. I put everything into that race,'' Fray said. "That's my race. It balances distance and speed.''

For her efforts, Fray was awarded track events MVP.

Fray wasn't the only Firebird who won twice. Melany Belot won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.73 and the triple jump, going 36 feet, 11 inches. Belot placed second in the 100 hurdles at the NSCHSAA league championships last weekend, a finish that motivated throughout the week.

"I said 'never again!' '' Belot said of the loss. "I had to win this race.''

Her teammate Bridget McNierney edged her out in the 400 hurdles, winning in 1:05.89. Belot was second in 1:06.19.

As well as Kellenberg asserted itself throughout the afternoon, it was St. Anthony's that won the team title, 67-61.

Melissa June won the 100 in 12.18. Teammates Halle Hazzard and Michaela Mincone finished second and third, respectively. June also won the 200 in 24.71.

Erica Goldman won the 400 in 59.30 seconds.

"I lifted my hips high well in the set position and pushed off,'' Goldman said of her start. "That gave me speed, so I could get a good place when I got out, rather than having to make it up.''

The title was first in the senior's career for an individual event. She finished second in the 400 at last year's meet.

Stephanie Leo won the 2,000 steeplechase in 7:23.12

Holy Trinity's Kristina Insingo won the field event MVP. Insingo won the shot put, throwing 40-31/2 and the discus, tossing 126-3.

Insingo credited her victory in the shot put to a recent change in her technique.

"I was a little slow coming out of the back,'' she said. "I sped it up and that helped.''

Our Lady of Mercy's Charlotte Molloy won the 3,000 in 10:44.15.
