Jets wideouts going gaga over specialty goggles
Jets receivers are wearing specialized sports goggles to improve their concentration when catching passes.
They feature dark lenses with a blinking strobe-light effect that have multiple settings designed to improve reaction time, hand-eye coordination and overall focus.
The players are using them after practice and sometimes at home.
Isaiah Williams started training with them about three weeks ago. He wears them to catch footballs, tennis balls and beanbags. He even puts them on at night at home and has his wife throw tennis balls to him.
“I wear them everywhere,” Williams told Newsday. “I've noticed a huge improvement already, yeah. Like, huge improvement.”
The goggles can be set for both lenses to flicker between clear and opaque. Another setting blocks or strobes the left lens and then it can be switched to the right. Each lens can also be set to alternately blink and at different speeds.
“It just helps you concentrate and lock in more,” rookie Omar Cooper Jr. told Newsday.
Adonai Mitchell was introduced to these goggles in his final year of college. Mitchell described it as “something being thrown at you” while you’re rapidly and repeatedly blinking.
“It really forces you to focus,” Mitchell said. “It forces you to focus and kind of anticipate where the ball will be. It’s great for preparation, for sure.”
