Jets are loving Geno Smith and what he's brought to the offense
Geno Smith has been spoken about with such reverence for the way he’s mastered the offense, his work ethic and how he carries himself.
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich said Smith is “setting the tone” as a leader who takes every rep seriously. Describing Smith as “dialed in,” Reich reiterated how impressed he is with his quarterback’s “laser-like focus.”
“I don’t want to overstate it – I’ve already said a lot,” Reich said. “Everything I’ve said is even more true than even I thought it was. … It’s just his mindset. He just comes to practice every day to get better and I just think the team feeds off of it.
“He’s highly competitive, doesn’t want to lose a rep. It’s a good for our locker room and our guys.”
Smith had some good days in camp and was 7-for-7 with a touchdown pass in his only preseason series. He’s also had not-so-sharp practices. That’s been Smith throughout his career.
He’s a definite upgrade from Justin Fields last year. It’s hard not to be. There is strong belief inside the Jets’ building that with Smith leading them, the offense is in good hands.
“The guy is just a true natural leader,” receiver Adonai Mitchell said. “He has this presence about him. He’s just what you would want from a quarterback.”
