Two old friends from Great Neck have combined two of their passions — rapping and New York Jets football — to produce a song that has become a viral sensation on the Internet and sports radio.

Matt Fox, 24, and Sean Henry, 19, combined to create "Rex’s Gang Green," a rap song dedicated to the surging Jets, who play the New England Patriots in an AFC playoff game Sunday.

The four-minute song, which the duo posted online Jan. 1, has more than 23,000 hits on YouTube and has been played on 1050 ESPN radio and cable TV station SportsNet New York.

Fox, a board operator at Sirius Satellite Radio, wrote the lyrics and produced the song, and Henry, who is studying at City College to be a math teacher, rapped the lyrics. It is a bravado-filled tongue-in-cheek song with such lyrics as, “Down to the wire, games make you crazy; Way more dramatic than Martin Scorsese.”

Fox said he promoted the song by sending it to Jets players via Twitter. At least one player — Freeport High School alum and Jets offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson — has expressed approval of the song in interviews, Fox said.

“I’m glad people see the humor in the song,” Fox said. “We’ve got a couple screws loose.”

The YouTube video clip advertises the song as “ 'Rex’s Gang Green' by the Fox Experience, ft. [featuring] Sean Henry.” Fox said he has been writing and producing music for about five years, about as long as Henry has been rapping as a hobby.

Henry said the song might not be the pair’s final collaboration, as some listeners and friends have been calling for a track about the New York Knicks.

For now, Fox and Henry are enjoying the success of the Jets’ song, Henry said.

“New York is such a powerful state and such a powerful city, every time we do anything successful, people want to hear about it,” he said. “Finally the Jets are making a run and everybody’s really hyped about it. It’s just kind of a good time for this song to be circulating.”
