For an unprecedented fourth time in a row, Shelter Island Supervisor Jim Dougherty has been elected head of the East End Supervisors and Mayor’s Association.
The organization meets monthly for lunch and to discuss issues of mutual concern on the north and south forks. When he was elected earlier this month in Greenport, various officials talked about the proposed culling of 3,000 deer across the East End by sharpshooters, but no consensus on the program was reached.
Dougherty said each town and village would be making its own decision on whether to allow hunters with night-vision scopes to shoot deer in February, and each municipality would be deciding how close to a house those hunters will be able to set up.
