Johnson leads Stony Brook to first America East win of season

Shania Johnson scored 13 of her 24 points during a 33-point third quarter as host Stony Brook defeated Vermont, 80-59, in America East women’s basketball on Saturday.

Stony Brook (9-8, 1-3 America East) trailed at the half, 35-34, but outscored Vermont (5-11, 2-1) 33-13 in the third quarter to take a 67-48 lead. The Seawolves were 11-for-15 from the floor in the quarter, including 6-for-6 on three-point shots.

Johnson added nine assists and four rebounds. Jerell Matthews had 20 points and shot 8-for-12. Stony Brook shot 31-for-57 (54 percent) overall, and a season-best 12-for-19 (63 percent) on three-pointers.

Saint Michael’s 62, Adelphi 59: Niajah Morgan had 16 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Fallyn Stephens added 15 points for Adelphi (9-9, 5-5 NE-10). The Panthers had four players finish in double figures.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Adelphi 106, Saint Michael’s 74: Jack Laffey scored 28 points for Adelphi (6-12, 2-8 NE-10). Tavon Ginyard added 21 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Panthers.

SUNY-Old Westbury 74, St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) 63: Yancy Ulysse had 23 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks to lift SUNY-Old Westbury (5-8, 4-4 Skyline). David Rodriguez added 15 points and four rebounds for the Panthers.

Farmingdale State 74, St. Joseph’s (L.I.) 45: Matthew Graham scored 16 points, and George Riefenstahl added 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to lead Farmingdale State (9-4, 7-2 Skyline). Stephen Cohen had 14 points, four rebounds and four steals for St. Joseph’s.

Mount St. Mary 93, USMMA 92: James Walsh had 24 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Christian Wittendorf added 21 points, six rebounds and four steals for USMMA (6-7, 4-5 Skyline).

Mercy 67, Molloy 65: Curtis Jenkins scored a career-high 29 points for Molloy (3-14, 2-5 ECC). Jenkins added nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Dequawne Richards had 15 points for Mercy (8-8, 4-4).
