The red, juicy strawberry -- what would summer be without it? The Mattituck Lions Club's annual festival is a testament to love of the berry.

It kicks off Thursday evening with hulling night, when volunteers huddle under tents to remove the green leaves and cores of thousands of berries that will be used in shortcakes, dipped in chocolate or slurped in daiquiris. Admission is free, and pay-one-price ride bracelets will go for $20.

The festival gets in full swing Friday and Saturday with arts and crafts, live music, more food and fireworks at dusk. It winds down Sunday with an acoustic jam on the main stage.
