It's New York's biggest day at the races, the annual running of the Belmont Stakes in Elmont. It its 143rd year, the affair has drawn as many as 120,000 spectators to watch the horses compete for a $1 million purse.

Although reserved seats are still available in the grandstand, many opt to pack a small cooler with snacks and set up in the casual backyard picnic area, which is wired with televisions to help you keep abreast of what's happening on the track -- you'll want to bring a small folding chair or blankets (but no alcohol, tents or glass bottles).


2. Trash or treasure?

Glen Cove's own version of "Antiques Roadshow" features appraiser Marion Rizzo, who will eyeball your collectibles and give you an idea of their worth. The evening includes wine, dinner and a fashion show -- reservations suggested.

3. Tea -- and tour

Experience a slice of English tradition -- an afternoon tea at Orchard Hill, the 1856 farmhouse that Old Westbury Gardens founder Peggie Phipps Boegner once called home. A seasonal tour of the flowering spring garden follows. Reservations required.

4. The Go-Go's

Belinda Carlisle and the all-female '80s rock group, The Go-Go's, continue the "Ladies Gone Wild" tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their "Beauty and the Beat" album, with a stop at NYCB Theatre. Opening act: the pop punk band, Dollyrots.

5. Pirate Festival

Swashbucklers descend on The Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville next weekend for a festival and classic boat show with family-friendly entertainment on the grounds of the historic waterfront museum. Characters from Ye Pyrate Brotherhood and Kings of the Coast are sure to entertain. Dress in pirate garb and you'll get some bounty.

6. Polish night

The Hejnal Polish-American Dancers of Long Island, Rich Bobinski Orchestra and Orginski Choir will pay homage to Polish culture with a night of free music and dancing on Thursday.
