Pop singer Katy Perry Tuesday appeared to respond to comments fellow singer Taylor Swift made about an unnamed recording star Swift calls an enemy who tried to sabotage her.
"Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing . . . " Perry, 29, tweeted, referring to the manipulative high school queen bee played by Rachel McAdams in "Mean Girls" (2004). As of Tuesday afternoon, Swift, 24, had not responded in turn.
The apparent contretemps began with a Rolling Stone interview published Monday in which Swift said her song "Bad Blood," from her forthcoming album, "1989," was about a singer at the same arena-concert level of stardom.
"For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not," said Swift, who has often channeled relationship turmoil into hit songs. "She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, 'Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?' "
Then last year, the other star "did something so horrible, I was like, 'Oh, we're just straight-up enemies.' And it wasn't even about a guy!" said Swift, who like Perry had dated singer John Mayer. "It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me."
In July 2013, dancers Lockhart Brownlie, Scott Myrick and Leah Adler left Swift's Red tour midway to join a tour by Perry, with whom they had toured in 2011.
Swift, disliking confrontation, said she now must avoid the other singer. "But I don't think there would be any personal problem if she weren't competitive," she added.
A spokeswoman for Swift and representatives for Perry did not respond to Newsday requests for comment.
