Once again people have been cited for extreme animal abuse ["Mother, daughter charged in animal abuse, deaths," News, Jan. 16]. Animals play an important role in our society. They serve in the military, perform duties for law enforcement, guide the blind and deaf, serve as companions for the elderly, lonely and disabled, and guard our businesses, homes and children.

The public has a right to know about the punishment of perpetrators of vicious acts upon defenseless animals.
