Jazmine Fray is rooting for her competition. It's not that the Kellenberg sophomore doesn't enjoy being the best -- she just loves the chase to the top. That's why she's hoping her 800-meter run of 2 minutes, 10.96 seconds -- best in the country this season -- is taken down soon.

"I hope somebody beats it," she said. "I'll be more motivated to run even faster. I want a challenge."

She set the national standard at last weekend's Hispanic Games at The Armory. It's also a Kellenberg school record, breaking Kim Mackay's mark of 2:14.75 set in 2010.

The early portion of the race set up perfectly for Fray.

"I saw that [the leaders] went out kind of fast," she said. "I just wanted to settle in and stay back."

As the race progressed, Fray saw the front of the pack slowing, and she made her move.

"I saw that I could take charge, and I won," she said.

Cultivating a strategy on the fly is the norm for Fray.

"She understands the process," coach Marty Brown said. "She has very good competitive instincts."
