Every Monday we'll post the girls soccer players of the week. Coaches, nominate your players – and show some love for the hard-working defenders who don’t show up in headlines and box scores - by e-mailing us at Michael.Gavin@newsday.com and Laura.Albanese@newsday.com. Be sure to follow @MikeGavin7 and @AlbaneseLaura on Twitter for all things girls soccer.
Here are the best of the best in Long Island girls soccer from the week of Oct. 14 to Oct. 20:
Brooke Salmon, Kellenberg: The Firebirds’ leading scorer found the back of the net for her most important goal of the season in a 2-1 win over St. Anthony’s. Salmon scored the winner with 2:48 remaining to help Kellenberg complete an unbeaten regular season and wrap up the CHSAA league championship. She finishes the regular season with nine goals and three assists.
Kelly Wynkoop, Shoreham-Wading River: The keeper made 14 saves in a 1-0 win over Bayport-Blue Point to record her seventh straight shutout (ninth overall) and keep Shoreham-Wading River at the top of League VI.
Alexa Dolgos, Island Trees: Had a goal and three assists in a 5-0 win over Oyster Bay, then scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 win over Valley Stream North en route to Island Trees wrapping up the Conference A-II title.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Longwood: The University of Miami-bound goalkeeper recorded 21 saves to lift Longwood to a 1-0 win over Sachem East.
Kelsey Cohen, Baldwin: Had a hand in all five of Baldwin’s goals in a 5-0 win over Uniondale, scoring twice and assisting on three others. Then had a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over Freeport to help the Bruins clinch the Conference AA-III title.
Sabrina Barton, Northport: The junior forward followed up her four-goal performance in an 8-1 win over Bay Shore by scoring two goals and assisting on two others in a 6-0 win over Hills East to help Northport complete an unbeaten regular season.
Kara Patrovic, Miller Place: Scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Center Moriches, including the winner two minutes into overtime, to help Miller Place clinch a playoff berth.
Hayley O’Hanlon, Garden City: (pictured) Had a goal and two assists in a 4-0 win over Plainedge and a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Clarke to help keep Garden City in the hunt for the Conference A-I title.
Karen Rodriguez, Brentwood: Scored the game winner with 37 seconds left in a 2-1 win over Longwood and assisted on Marilyn Hernandez’s goal 19 seconds into the game.
Shelby Fredericks, Babylon: Long Island’s leading goal scorer becomes the first player this season to be named a two-time player of the week. That’s what happens when you record hat tricks in back-to-back games as she did in wins over Smithtown Christian and Pierson/Bridgehampton. She now has 20 goals on the season.
