Kids with disabilities get chance to surf

Children with disabilities will get a chance to “hang 10” in Long Beach on Wednesday.
The kids will be offered the ride of their lives through Surfer’s Way, a Long Beach-based nonprofit organization that teams up special-needs children with lifelong surfers.
The free surf outing will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverside Beach, at Riverside Boulevard and Broadway.
The children will each get on a longboard accompanied by an experienced surfer such as Elliot Zuckerman. He founded Surfer's Way and started putting children with disabilities on surfboards in the 1980s. The children will be required to wear life jackets.
Zuckerman said the outings offer the children an opportunity to experience the exhilaration and liberation of surfing. He said he expects more than 250 children from around the country to attend.
