Last August, we participated in the Oyster Bay Junior Triathlon. The events in a triathlon are swimming, biking and running. We swam 200 meters, we biked two miles and ran one mile.

The training for a triathlon is not easy. You have to train often; you can't just go and do the event. Your training will pay off when the race begins. If you don't train for the event, you are only setting yourself up for failure. You need to train hard. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment, but then when the triathlon comes, you will be amazed at how well you do.

The worst part of the triathlon is that you have to wake up early, at about 5:30 a.m., to get to the event on time. Once you get to the starting location, you have to sign in, get your cap and have your body numbered. Once that is completed, you can set your bike on a rack and place all your gear in what is known as the transition area.

In 2009, Alexa competed for the first time. Kaitlyn joined her in 2010. We all did a great job, and our training paid off; but more importantly we all had a great time. So if you are interested in doing a triathlon, make sure to sign up early, and train, train, train!

It's the start of a new year. If you are looking for a goal for fitness, a triathlon might be just the event to get you motivated.

Our TV poll

We all have time to watch TV, and there are some shows we like to watch over and over again. What are your favorites? We asked 115 kids in the fifth and sixth grades that question, and here is what we found out.

'Everybody Hates Chris' ...... 63

'SpongeBob SquarePants'..... 21

'George Lopez' ........................ 14

'My Wife and Kids' .................. 8

'Malcolm in the Middle' ......... 6

'Family Matters' ........................ 3

The kids in our school like comedies. The winner was "Everybody Hates Chris." One of our classmates said the show is just so funny, and it is so much better than every other show on TV. Another classmate added that it is the best when Chris' mother gets angry.

Another classmate insists that "SpongeBob SquarePants" is still the best, even though it has been on TV for a long time. It is really funny.
