Kings Park School District residents would see a 2.9 percent tax increase under a budget that was approved by the school board Tuesday.

The $79.1-million spending plan, 1.74 percent larger than the current $77.8-million budget, would go into effect if district voters approve it May 17.

The budget calls for cutting 23 teaching positions: nine due to declining enrollment, 11 because of budget cuts and three due to a combination of the two. Three assistant coaching positions also would be eliminated.

District officials said the owners of an average home, assessed at $6,000, would see their annual school tax bill would go up $213, to $7,502 from $7,289.
