A controversial proposal to rezone residential properties near the intersection of Old Northport and Lawrence roads will be among the topics discussed tonight at a meeting of the Kings Park Civic Association.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Kings Park High School, 200 Route 25A. The meeting is open to Kings Park residents.

A consultant hired by the Town of Smithtown has recommended placing 92 acres of undeveloped residential land in a new zoning category allowing industrial uses. The consultant argued the land is unsuitable for homes because of excavation that could cause flooding and other problems.

Town officials criticized the proposal, and town planning director Frank DeRubeis said Tuesday he is drafting a response to the consultant’s report.

Civic association president Sean Lehmann said Wednesday the group also will discuss the proposed Uplands at St. Johnland assisted living facility, and residents’ concerns about existing industrial properties in Kings Park.
