The Smithtown Town Board is expected to consider approving a summer farmers market to be located at the municipal parking lot on Route 25A east of Indian Head Road in Kings Park.

It would be the first farmers market in the town.

The town board likely will vote on whether to approve the market next month, said Smithtown Councilman Bob Creighton.

“I don’t anticipate any problems with it,” he said.

Ann Marie Nedell and Aly Elish-Swartz, both members of the Kings Park Civic Association, have been working with Long Beach-based Friends & Farmers Inc., which also runs markets in Long Beach, Hicksville and Glen Cove.

“We love farmers markets,” said Nedell. “We wanted this for Kings Park.”

Added Elish-Swartz: “We wanted a true farmers market focused on just really selling things that were produced locally by farmers.”

They hope the market is approved and opens by June 26. It would run one weekend day through the fall.

Business leaders in Nesconset also are seeking to start a farmers market in that hamlet.
