Kings Park school budget, psych center on agenda

Kings Park Psychiatric Center, Route 25A, Kings Park, once was home to more than 9,000 mentally ill patients, and believers maintain many of them haunt the remaining grounds. The buildings were shuttered in 1993, and some structures on the property have been demolished. Kings Park schools Superintendent Susan Agruso and trustee Tom Locascio will discuss the proposed school budget at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Kings Park Civic Association.
The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at Kings Park High School, 200 Rte. 25A.
The school district has proposed an $80.8 million budget for the 2012-13 school year that would raise taxes 2.49 percent. The hike would not exceed the state’s 2 percent cap on tax levy increases because of allowable exceptions such as debt, legal settlements and pension contributions.
In addition to the school budget, the civic association plans to discuss the planned demolition of 15 buildings at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center and a proposed athletic field complex on Old Northport Road.
