Kristen Brown named Gatorade New York Softball Player of the Year

The dream season continues for MacArthur’s Kristen Brown.

One day after capturing the Long Island championship, Brown was named the Gatorade New York Softball Player of the Year. She is the first Long Island winner since Olivia Galati won in 2009 with St. John the Baptist. Brown is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year, which will be announced later in the month.

Brown, who is bound for the University of North Carolina as a shortstop, is hitting just under .570 with a career-best 15 home runs and 45 RBIs. In the circle, she has gone 9-3 with a 2.27 ERA, including 5-1 in the postseason. She led the Generals to their first county title since 2004 and first Long Island championship since 1988.

Brown will conclude her stellar high school softball career on Saturday.  MacArthur will be competing in the state tournament in Queensbury in hopes of taking home the school’s first-ever state title.

“To be one of the top kids in the state, that’s special," said MacArthur coach Bobby Fehrenbach. "Top kid in conference, top kid in county, that’s pretty nice. But you’re talking about the top kid in the state. It's something she's worked so hard for. The kid has a passion, a desire. She's great at what she does.”
