Larry Cantwell gets Dems’ nod for East Hampton supervisor

East Hampton’s Democratic Party at its convention this week overwhelmingly picked Larry Cantwell to be their candidate for town supervisor in the November election.

But Zachary Cohen — who almost won the supervisor’s race two years ago — narrowly failed to get the party’s nod for town board.

Instead, the town committee members picked former town councilman Job Potter and Kathee Burke-Gonzales, who had been selected by the party’s screening committee.

Cohen and Kathleen Cunningham, chair of the Quiet Skies Committee formed to oppose noise coming from helicopters using the town-owned airport, were nominated from the floor, but failed to get a majority of votes.

Lawyer Steve Tekulsky, the screening committee’s pick for town justice, easily defeated a floor challenge from Joseph Giannini.

The town’s Republicans were to have originally held their convention earlier this month, but decided to postpone it until after the Democrats selected their candidates.

Cantwell, who is retiring as East Hampton village administrator, has already been endorsed by the Independence Party.
