Parts of eastern Long Island could receive more than 9 inches of snow Friday night into Saturday, according to the final pre-storm advisory from the National Weather Service in Upton.

The forecast, released shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday, shows a slight uptick in potential snow accumulations for the island.

Parts of Nassau County, for example, are projected to receive nearly 8.8 inches of snow while Westhampton could get 9.2 inches of accumulation, the weather service said.

While light, dry and powdery snow may start falling late Friday afternoon, the heaviest snowfall is expected between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., when 1 to 2 inches could fall per hour for a 2- to 5-hour period, the advisory states.

Rates could briefly exceed 2 inches per hour, the weather service said, particularly across central or eastern Long Island.

Sleet may briefly mix in for areas south of I- 78 in New Jersey and south shore of New York City and western Long Island Friday evening, potentially lowering snow totals, officials said.

Light snow will continue through Saturday morning, tapering off between 8 a.m. and midday, officials said.

The advisory warns of “difficult travel from intense snowfall rates, snow-covered roads and visibilities reduced down to ¼ mile at times, particularly between 6pm and 2am. Isolated downed tree branches and power outages possible due to snow load.”
