Lavalle, Moroney spark Manhasset

Rather than aim for the far side of the net, Manhasset junior attack Dino Lavalle set his sights on a narrow opening on the near side.

"Coach [Bill] Cherry preaches, 'You've got to go far side,' but today the goalie was coming off the pipe a little bit," Lavalle said. "When you have that little sliver on the near side, I thought it would be a good time to take it and mix it up a little bit. Luckily, it went in."

Lavalle scored all of his career-high five goals during the second quarter, twice wedging the ball inside the near post, and Quinn Moroney added two goals and four assists as host Manhasset cruised past South Side, 13-5, Thursday night in Nassau Conference III lacrosse.

Moroney set up Lavalle on three occasions in the second quarter. With the Indians leading 2-0 after the first, Moroney wrapped around the left side of the net and found Lavalle in front to make the score 3-0 with 9:42 to go in the second.

"He just makes everyone around him better because his passes are always on the money and he'll always find you, no matter where you are," Lavalle said of Moroney, who is third on Long Island in assists with 41.

"All you've got to do is finish for him, and it's really nice to play with a player who can beat his man and find you so you can get a few goals."

Manhasset (8-2, 6-0) started the game on an 8-0 run and scored five goals in a span of 3:20 midway in the second quarter to create an insurmountable deficit.

Manhasset expanded its lead to 13-2 after the third quarter, with Tom Wenk notching a pair of goals and an assist.

Chandler Baylis made 10 saves for South Side (6-5, 2-2), which scored three goals in the fourth quarter after both teams went to backup goalies.
