Leftovers: Nassau Class C Final

Here are some leftover notes and quotes from North Shore’s 14-13 win over Cold Spring Harbor in the Nassau Class C final on Wednesday at Adelphi. You can check out the game story here – if you haven’t already – and then scroll down for the good stuff we couldn’t squeeze into the paper.

Johansen had the assist on Micaela Dussel’s tying goal with 40.4 seconds left in regulation. On a free position, Dussel set up about 10 yards left of the goal and Johansen tossed her a lob pass at the whistle. Dussel drove inside, pump-faked, and then shot one into the right corner from close range. “I have so much confidence in her,” Johansen said. “I’ve been playing with her for four years and I believed that she would make that shot.”

North Shore had also rallied from down 12-10 in the final minutes to beat Seaford, 13-12, in the semifinals.

After Johansen’s seventh goal pulled North Shore to within 13-11 with 3:18 remaining, Cold Spring Harbor won the draw and went into their stall offense. The Seahawks drained about two minutes off the clock, but then took a chance. They threw a long pass back to their own territory (presumably, with the goal of making North Shore, already tied, have to recover and chase toward the other end, thus killing some extra seconds. A second pass, however, went out of bounds along the far sideline and North Shore regained possession with 1:02 left. Tess Korten scored seven seconds later to pull the Vikings within 1.

“It was a designed play,” Skakandi said. “It happened prematurely, though. We went to it too early, it got sloppy and we turned it over. We didn’t take care of the ball there, but it wasn’t one person’s fault. You try something a little risky and sometimes it works in your favor and sometimes it doesn’t. That time it backfired.”
