Leslie McDonald leads UNC in romp over Mississippi State

Leslie McDonald scored 21 points, one of five North Carolina players in double figures, in an easy 95-49 win over Mississippi State Monday at the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.

P.J. Hairston scored 18, Reggie Bullock 16 and Dexter Strickland and James McAdoo each scored 10 for the Tar Heels. Ninth-ranked UNC (4-0) scored the game's first nine points and led 29-6 in less than 10 minutes. Mississippi State (1-2) never came closer than 20 points after that.

Arizona 94, Long Beach State 72: Brandon Ashley had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead host No. 10 Arizona (3-0) over Long Beach State (1-3). Solomon Hill added 15 points and Nick Johnson had 12 points and five assists for the Wildcats, who shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the floor. James Ennis led Long Beach State with 17 points.

Fordham 70, Penn 68:The Rams (1-3), led by Branden Frazier's 19 points, got their first win of the season at the NIT Tip-off Tournament in Bethlehem, Pa. Penn is 1-4.

Stanford on top

Stanford (5-0) is the new No. 1 women's team in the nation, barely edging Connecticut (2-0) for the top spot in The Associated Press poll. The Cardinal jumps from fourth after beating former No. 1 Baylor, 71-69, on Friday, ending the Lady Bears' 42-game winning streak. Baylor is third, Duke is fourth and Notre Dame fifth.

Hoosiers still No. 1

Indiana (4-0) still is a runaway No. 1 in the AP men's poll and Louisville (5-0) is a solid second. Kentucky, which lost to Duke, 75-68, last Tuesday, dropped from third to eighth. Ohio State and Michigan both move up one place to third and fourth, while Duke jumps from ninth to fifth. Syracuse, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina and Arizona round out the top 10.-- AP
